Rodent Removal

To accurately estimate rodent control, we typically need to inspect the home and assess the infestation. These pests can cause significant damage and pose health risks. Usually, we identify the rodent type through a detailed inspection of the home, attic, and crawlspaces. Hurd’s Pest Control’s expert technicians locate entry points and provide a complete treatment plan. The most effective approach combines rodenticides and traps, elimination of shelter, food, and water sources, plus rat-proofing measures.

Earwigs

Earwigs (Forficula auricularia) are nocturnal insects recognized by their elongated bodies and distinctive pincers on their abdomen. They prefer moist, dark environments like mulch, gardens, and basements. While earwigs mostly feed on decaying plant material, they can sometimes damage flowers and vegetables. Though they might look intimidating, earwigs are generally harmless to humans and don’t spread disease. Managing earwigs involves reducing moisture around the home, removing debris, and sealing entry points to keep them outside.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs have become a common issue in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. At Hurd’s Pest Control, we begin by consulting with the caller to develop a thorough treatment plan. Most homes need at least two technician visits. Homeowners must prepare before treatment—more prep means lower costs. Effective bed bug treatment targets all cracks, crevices, and upholstery like curtains, which may need removal or treatment. Every part of the bed, pictures, and potential hiding spots must be addressed. This extensive process requires full cooperation between homeowner and technician.

Rats and Mice

Two types of rats commonly infest homes here: the Roof Rat and the Norway Rat, along with the smaller house mouse. Despite misconceptions, rats are intelligent creatures with a long history. The Roof Rat (Rattus rattus) goes by many names, including ship rat, white-bellied rat, gray-bellied rat, Alexandrine rat, and climbing rat. It’s slender and more streamlined than the Norway Rat, with darker fur and a lighter belly. Its eyes and ears are relatively large, it has a pointed nose, and its tail is longer than its body. Roof Rat droppings average about 0.5 inches long.

House Crickets

House crickets (Acheta domesticus) are common indoor pests known for their distinctive chirping sounds, especially during warm months. They are typically light brown with three dark bands on their heads and can grow up to about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long. House crickets are nocturnal and seek shelter in dark, damp areas like basements, kitchens, and closets. While they don’t bite or spread disease, their presence can be a nuisance due to their noise and potential to damage fabrics, paper, and food packaging. Effective control involves eliminating moisture sources, sealing entry points, and using targeted treatments to reduce populations.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is a small species, typically 1.1 to 1.6 cm (0.43 to 0.63 in) long. Its color ranges from tan to nearly black, with two dark, roughly parallel stripes on the pronotum running from behind the head to the wing bases. Although it has wings, the German cockroach rarely flies and may only glide when disturbed. Among domestic cockroach pests, it is likely the most widespread and problematic. It closely resembles the Asian cockroach, and they can easily be confused. However, the Asian cockroach is attracted to light and can fly like a moth, while the German cockroach cannot.

Silverfish

Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are small, wingless insects with silvery-gray, scaled bodies that move in a fish-like, wriggling motion. They thrive in dark, damp environments such as bathrooms, basements, and kitchens. Silverfish feed on starchy materials like paper, glue, and fabrics, which can lead to damage in homes. Although they don’t bite or transmit disease, their presence signals moisture problems and can cause frustration due to the damage they inflict. Controlling silverfish involves reducing humidity, sealing cracks, and removing food sources to prevent infestations.

Spiders

Only two groups of spiders are considered poisonous to humans. They are recluse spiders and widow spiders. Tarantulas, jumping spiders, wolf spiders and some other spiders are hairy and formidable-looking, but their bite is typically less harmful than a bee sting. There are nearly 1,000 species of spiders found in Texas, but only a few are harmful to humans. Most are beneficial, feeding on pests of agricultural crops ants and mosquitoes that they ensnare in their silken traps.

Ants

Texas hosts several common ant species, and knowing them helps residents handle infestations. The Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA) is aggressive and delivers a painful sting, building large mounds that disrupt yards and outdoor areas. Carpenter Ants tunnel through wood to create nests, risking structural damage if ignored. The Odorous House Ant releases a strong, unpleasant smell when crushed and is attracted to sweets, often invading homes. The Little Black Ant is small and black, frequently entering homes in large numbers searching for food. Finally, the Texas Leafcutter Ant is known for cutting leaves and can damage garden vegetation. Recognizing these ants’ behaviors enables homeowners to apply effective control and prevention strategies.
